This is a question that comes up regularly: you have a Dax or a Monkey with a platinum screw ignition (usually 6 volts) and you want to put an engine with electronic ignition (12 volts), what do you need?
Case 1 = You want to keep the indicators and/or it’s an engine with electric starter
-You need a wiring for the CDI assembly, as this universal wiring will allow you to connect the ignition part of the new engine and to connect a CDI like this one for example and the high voltage coil (not compulsory but better to change it)
-You will have to connect the circuit breaker of the CDI on your contactor.
-For the lighting and the indicators there are 2 solutions:
either you keep everything in 6 volts (bulbs, battery, indicator relay) and in this case you have to mount a quality 6 volts regulator/rectifier at the stator output and enter the regulated 6 volts in your original wiring. Please note that this simple solution is obviously not suitable for engines with electric starters (12V).
or you change everything for 12 volts (mandatory for motors with electric starter) in this case you need: 1 12 volts battery (if you have a chassis that accepts the support provided for (like the one here for Dax) this battery is suitable. If you don’t have enough space (Z50A for example) this battery is more suitable (we also have the connection pin here) . but also a 12 volt flasher relay, a 12 volt regulator/rectifier, and all the 12 volt bulbs
Case 2 = You don’t fit indicators.
-You need a wiring for the CDI assembly, as this universal wiring will allow you to connect the ignition part of the new engine and to connect a CDI like this one for example and the high voltage coil (not compulsory but better to change it)
-For the lighting you don’t need a relay and battery.
You want to switch to 12 volts: you just need a 12 volts regulator: on the output you will connect the lights you use with 12 volts bulbs.
You want to stay with 6 volts and in this case you need to mount a quality 6 volt regulator/rectifier at the stator output and enter this regulated voltage in your original wiring.
